I came across this recipe for No-Fail Pizza Hut Style Breadsticks from Gourmet Mom on the Go, who had originally gotten it from her friend Ruth. Naturally, I had to give it a try—especially since I was already planning to make the Pizza Hut Pan Pizza recipe that same day. These delicious breadsticks came together quickly and easily, which is always a win when you’re juggling multiple dishes in the kitchen.
Now, I won’t claim they’re an exact replica of Pizza Hut’s famous breadsticks, but they’re absolutely delicious in their own right. Soft, buttery, and perfectly seasoned, they’re ready in just over 30 minutes, which makes them a fantastic option for busy weeknights or impromptu pizza parties. If you’re making the pan pizza, you can also whip up the sauce recipe that comes with it for dipping, but I opted to serve mine with my homemade pizza sauce, and it paired beautifully.

Next time, I’m planning to take things up a notch by adding a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese on top before baking, turning them into cheesy breadsticks that are even closer to the real deal. Because let’s be honest, everything’s better with melty cheese!

Instructions for Copycat Pizza Hut Breadsticks
Start by combining hot water, sugar, salt, and dry milk powder in a large mixing bowl. Stir until everything is dissolved. Add about 1 cup of flour to create a soupy mixture—this helps activate the yeast later. Let the mixture cool slightly until it’s warm but no longer hot, then stir in the active dry yeast until fully dissolved.
Gradually add the remaining flour, mixing until a moderately stiff dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface until it’s smooth and elastic—this usually takes about 5–7 minutes. Roll the dough into a rectangle that fits your baking pan (a standard 9×13-inch pan works well).
Spread half of the melted butter onto the bottom of the pan, then lay the dough on top. Brush the remaining butter over the surface of the dough. Sprinkle generously with your favorite toppings—garlic salt, grated Parmesan cheese, and salad seasoning salt are classic choices. I used garlic salt and Parmesan for that signature flavor.
Use a pizza cutter to score the dough into breadstick shapes, then let it rise for 10–15 minutes in a warm spot. Bake at 350°F for 20–25 minutes, or until the breadsticks are lightly golden and cooked through.
Serve warm dipping sauce like marinara sauce, ranch, or even a side of melted garlic butter. These breadsticks are pure comfort food—and they disappear fast!
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to use dry milk powder?
Dry milk powder adds richness and helps with browning, but you can substitute with warm milk (reduce the water slightly) or omit it if needed—the breadsticks will still turn out tasty.
Can I make the dough ahead of time?
Absolutely. You can prepare the dough and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours. Let it come to room temperature and rise before baking.
What seasonings work best for topping?
Classic toppings include garlic salt, Parmesan cheese, and Italian seasoning. You can also try ranch seasoning, red pepper flakes, or a sprinkle of cheddar for a cheesy twist.
How many homemade pizza hut breadsticks does this recipe make?
It depends on how you cut them, but typically you’ll get 12–16 breadsticks from a standard 9×13-inch pan.
Can I freeze leftovers?
Yes! Let them cool completely, then freeze in an airtight container. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for 8–10 minutes to restore their texture.

Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cup hot water
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup non fat dry milk
- 1 Tbsp yeast
- 3 cup flour Gourmet Mom often uses ½ whole wheat flour
- ⅓ cup butter melted (I used half of the butter, just softened and spread it in the pan. The other half I melted and poured it on top)
Instructions
- Dissolve sugar, salt and dry milk in hot water. Add enough flour (~1 cup) to make a soupy mixture. When the mixture is no longer hot but still warm add the yeast and stir well.
- Then add the rest of the flour, enough to form a moderately stiff dough. Knead the dough until smooth. Roll dough into a rectangular shape the size of your baking pan.
- Spread half of the butter onto the baking pan, then place your dough into the pan and spread the remaining butter on top of the dough.
- Top the breadsticks with garlic salt, Parmesan cheese, salad seasoning salt, or whatever you want. (I sprinkled garlic salt and Parmesan cheese) Cut the dough into breadsticks with a pizza cutter and let raise for 10-15 min. Bake at 350 degrees for 20- 25 min. Yum!
