My New Home – Window Coverings

When selecting the window coverings for my new home, I knew I wanted shutters for my main floor, but wasn’t sure of what I wanted for my basement.

I scheduled appointments with several different companies to come and give me bids. Ultimately, the company I liked the best and offered the best price for me was The Blind Spot.

For all of the windows on my main floor, I went with a 4 1/2 slat or louver sized white shutter. The color and size best matched with craftsman style molding we chose for our home. I have always loved shutters but never had them before. I love how you can basically get shutters and not have to worry about any other items like curtains for your windows. They also add value to you home unlike basic blinds do. They are considered part of the home just like the kitchen cabinets. Basically it’s like cabinets for your windows.

On some windows we chose a whole one piece tilt rod, but on many we did a 2/3 and 1/3 tilt rod. This way if we want privacy but still want to let natural light in our home, we can leave the top 1/3 open and the bottom 2/3 closed. I have already received many compliments for the shutters.

For most homes it Utah, they include an underground basement, as did out new home. For our basement, I chose to go a different less expensive route. I chose to use black out roller shades. Roller shades are a big new trend you can see in window coverings. There are many options as far as look of the actual shade available. I loved the look of them and found them perfect for my basement. Plus, they will be a lot easier to clean than the traditional blinds that I was use to.

I opted for a light texture colored shade. It was basically white with a texture that had degrees of tan in it. The walls in the basement are tan.

Most of the windows in the basement are in the main entertainment area. This is used as a media viewing/game area. I like the idea of the black out shades for when we are watching a movie or tv. However, the shades are available to allow whatever level of light you want to let into the room.

I also opted for a casing for the top of the shades. This hides the actual roll for the shade and will also hid the shade if we ever choose to roll them up.

Disclosure: I was not compensated in any way for this post. I simply wanted to share my knowledge and experience with my readers.
