Shirley J BBQ Ribs

As promised, I have another giveaway to share with you today.  I have shared a recipe with you before for beef roast using Shirley J’s beef slow cooker seasoning mix.  Well the folks at Shirley J’s have been nice enough to offer their BBQ sauce mix to 3 of you.  They also sent some for me to try out and I created a yummy rib recipe with it.

I used the same method for the ribs as I shared in yesterday’s post, but seasoned the meat with the Shirley J bbq sauce mix like a dry rub.  Then I basted them with a sauce made using the same mix blended with some root beer.  The results were fabulous.

So to enter this giveaway, hop on over to Shirley J’s then come back and tell me which of their products you would like to try.  Then come back here and leave a comment of which product you want to try.  that’s it.  You have until Tuesday May 25 at 10 pm (MST) to enter.  I will announce the winner on Wednesday May 26 and notify them by email.

Shirley J BBQ Ribs

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 3 lbs. baby back ribs
  • 1/2 cup Shirley J BBQ sauce mix, plus extra to season ribs
  • 1 1/3 cup root beer  (just a little less than a can I used the MUG brand)
  1. Season ribs with Shirley J BBQ seasoning.  You want a good even coating.  Place ribs in fridge for 2 hours.
  2. In a broiler pan, place the water and soy sauce in the bottom of the pan.  Place the insert of the boiler pan on the pan.  Your gonna create a nice steam bath for this ribs.
  3. Place ribs on the pan.  Completely cover the ribs in the pan with aluminum foil.  You want it nice and sealed to keep that steam in there.  Cook in a 200 degree preheated oven for 4-6 hours.  low and slow is the trick here folks.
  4. Meanwhile in a saucepan, combine the root beer and 1/2 cup Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix together and simmer for five minutes.  Set aside until ribs finish in oven.
  5. Remove ribs from pan and brush all over with about 2/3 cup of  the bbq sauce.
  6. Place the ribs on a preheated grill.  We keep the temp in between high and sear.  You want to get the sauce to coat the ribs and get a little charred.  Cook for just a few minutes on each side.  Serve with remaining sauce.  Enjoy.  Serves 4.

These look delicious! I just saw a Pizza pasta salad that I would love to try with these Ribs. We are lucky in Florida that we have plenty of time to BBQ with our weather so I will try these. You have a good idea with the root beer. Some cooks in the south have used coke on the meats. It really adds flavor.

  52. Debra Disney-Dior May 22, 2010 at 1:35 pm #

All I can say about Shirley’s product is “WOW!” The mixes/rubs/potions are amazing. Some of Shirley’s products I never knew existed — like the “Dough Enhancer” that strengthens the gluten structure of homemade bread and the “White Cheddar” that never separates, lumps or curdles! Be still my heart! I was smitten with the 2/3 pan, WITH COVER, that’s designed, specifically, to fully fit in a conventional oven. ::sighing:: Shirley’s products are EASY to use and the result appears, to family and guests, that you slaved away in the kitchen ALL day! All in all, I would LOVE to have a jar of Shirley’s BBQ Sauce Mix. I fell last night, and now I’m confined to bed. I must stay off my feet, for 1 to 2 weeks, so my new friends are my bed and the recliner. I CAN “hobble,” so I would give ANYTHING to have a jar of Shirley’s Beef Slow Cooker. NOW! I would hobble my way to the crockpot, place the beef in the crock, pour in Shirley’s seasoning, cover, plug in the cord, and hobble off to Buffalo , with my laptop and a good mystery, for the rest of the day. I would LOVE to be one of the 3 winners.

  75. Kim T. May 22, 2010 at 8:03 am #

I think the bbq sauce mix sounds great, but I am also a big fan of Sourdough bread, but not the time to put into getting the starter ready. So the fact that they have a sourdough bread mix that doesn’t need a starter is AWESOME!!!
