Orange Blender Drink

This is a recipe that comes from my mother-in-law. It’s suppose to be a homemade version of an orange julius. When I was a young girl I had a similar recipe that I would make, however it called for raw egg and nutmeg. Now a days it is not recommend to eat raw egg. This recipe is basically the same as what I made a a girl without the raw egg and nutmeg. My mother also now makes this from Christmas as part of her brunch.

Orange Blender Drink

1 (6 oz) can frozen orange juice concentrate (this is is hard to find now so just use half of a 12 oz)
1 cup milk (I use skim)
1 cup cold water
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
10-12 ice cubes (More if needed to make desired consistency)

Put ingredients in blender and blend until smooth.
Makes 4-6 servings.

I've made this many times since I was a kid. One thing I did instead of using the frozen concentrate, I would use 2 cups of reconstituted orange juice and omit the water. Also, if you want to turn this into a smoothie, add a few scoops of sherbet and some frozen fruit (you can leave out the sugar if you do this if you don't want it to be as sweet).

I made this drink the other day and I put a couple teaspoons of meringue powder (which is egg white powder) and it gave it the frothy effect. I decorate cakes so I always have meringue powder on hand, but I guess others probably don’t have that. I wonder if Orange Julius used meringue powder in theirs… because I remember seeing them put a white powder in their drinks.

just a tip: you can now buy pasteurized eggs still in the shell (which eliminates any chance of salmonella). So if you wanted to get the frothy effect that comes with using an egg, just look for pasteurized eggs in the shell. :)

I use to work at a Orange Julius so I’m a fan of these drinks. Thanks for the recipe!

Yum!! I love to make this, but have never added the water. I’ll have to try it this way.

I grew up on this drink too! It is wonderful and refreshing. It is also good with a banana blended in.

My parents would do orange julius with raw egg as well. It tasted so wonderful! I’ll have to try this when I get the chance, I’m sure it will bring back memories!
