Sweet Chili

When I was growing up, every year for Halloween my mom would make homemade chili. Since having my own children, I decided to carry on the tradition. Last year, I did decide to stray from the original recipe slightly. I wanted to make a quicker version. Mom’s original recipe needs to be started the night before you want to eat it. The secret ingrdient to this Mom’s chili recipe is the brown sugar. It adds the level of sweetness, but the classic chili powder still gives it that chili kick. This recipe makes a lot. I was able to feed my family and three of my son’s friends, plus have leftovers. You could always make have a recipe if you need to. Tomorrow, I’ll show you my favorite thing to do with the leftovers.

Sweet Chili
In a soup pot, brown:
1 pound hamburger
1 medium onion
Drain off grease.
Then add:
5 (15 oz) cans of Kidney Beans, undrained
2 (6 oz.) cans tomato paste
2 cans tomato soup
4 tsp. chili powder
3/4 cup brown sugar
Simmer for 1 hour.

My family wasn't in love with this chili on it's own. We thought a little more spiciness to counteract the sweetness would have been good.

However, this was so perfect for the topping on Navajo Tacos!

I will have to try this version! I have a similar recipe without the brown sugar and I like to do 1 can each of all different beans. it just makes the chili look really pretty, you should try it!

I made this yesterday and really did like it. I changed a few things and added a few things but it was really good. Hopefully I’ll get it up on my blog in the next day or two. I made this specifically for navajo tacos and it turned out great.

Laura, that looks good! You asked Melanie about scones…do you mean the fried bread kind? If so, check out my blog and find the recipe in the index…hope that’s what you’re looking for!

That does sound delicious. I love changing things up by adding sugar – it usually works out great!

This sound PERFECT for a cold day like today! My mom’s recipe has brown sugar in it too! Yours varies slightly, so I will have to try it. Thanks.
