Easy Orange Beef

I love to be able to make oriental dishes at home. However, I do have a challenge with that. My husband doesn’t like most oriental food. So I have to find oriental dishes I can make at home that my husband will actually eat. This simple orange beef dish sounded like it would work and I was right, he liked it!

The beef was tender, it had great flavor, and it was quick to make. It is another recipe that is ready in 30 minutes or less. Everyone enjoyed it and actually asked for more. The kids also wanted more sauce for the rice so next time I may make 1 1/2 or 2 recipes of the sauce. Watch for flank steak to go on sale and pick up a couple to keep in your freezer to make this dish.

Now when it comes to slicing the flank steak be sure to place the meat in the freezer for 15-20 minutes before slicing. This will make it much easier to slice. You can mix the sauce up while the meat is in the freezer. Be sure to slice across the grain or your meat will be tough. It also helps to use a good knife. I have a wonderful serrated knife I got for my wedding and it works beautifully.

Orange Beef

Ingredients
  • zest of 1 orange
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tsp Asian chili sauce
  • 2 tsp crushed or grated fresh ginger
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
  • canola oil for pan
  • 1-1/2 pounds flank steak, trimmed and sliced thin across grain and lightly sprinkled with salt and pepper (see post for tips on doing this)
  • hot cooked rice for serving
  • 3-4 green onions, sliced for garnish
Instructions
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk the orange zest, orange juice, brown sugar, vinegar, soy sauce, chili sauce, ginger, and cornstarch together until combined. Set aside.
  2. Drizzle oil into a large skillet that has been heated over medium to medium high heat. Add half of beef, breaking up any clumps and cook without stirring for one minute. Stir beef and continue to cook until browned, about 2 minutes. Transfer cooked beef to a bowl and cover.
  3. Repeat with remaining beef and transfer to bowl.
  4. Whisk prepared orange sauce and add to the same skillet the beef was cooked in. Cook sauce over medium heat until thickened, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Return cooked beef and any accumulated juices to skillet and toss to coat with the sauce.
  6. Serve beef over cooked rice and garnish with sliced green onions. Serves 4.
