Homemade Croutons

I must say, one of my favorite things to put on a salad is croutons.  I love the added crunch you get from them and it is so simple to make your own.  It is an especially good way to use up leftover bread that has dried up.  I do think they are best when they are made with artisan type bread.  I also like to use garlic infused olive oil, but you can use plain olive oil or any other flavored olive oil you like.  I get my oil from my local Harmon’s grocery store.

Homemade Croutons

Ingredients
  • 1 baguette loaf, cut into bit sized pieces
  • ¼ cup olive oil (I use garlic infused) **see note
  • kosher salt, to taste
Instructions
  1. Place the diced baguette pieces on a large baking sheet and drizzle with the oil.
  2. Use you hands to toss the pieces in the oil and get them all well coated.
  3. Then sprinkle with desired about of salt. I use at least 1 tsp.
  4. Place in a 200 degree oven and bake for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
Notes
I just buy the garlic infused olive oil from the store but you can make your own. Heat the ¼ cup oil in a small sauce pan over low heat. Once the oil is warm add 2 whole cloves of garlic that have but crushed but not chopped. You want the whole so you can remove them later. Allow to sit in the warm oil over low heat for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and remove the garlic cloves. Now your oil is ready to use.

  • I like this idea better than some others floating around on the net. Some other methods ask people to let the bread stay out a bit to “naturally” harden, but who has the time?

Simple and easy method right here, can’t go wrong. Thanks for the post.
