1 Minute Brownie In a Mug


Today’s recipe can be made in a mug, but I had some cute little dishes I used instead.  I figured it would be hard to see the brownie for the photo buried in the bottom of a mug.  This brownie is very chocolatey to I highly recommend opting for the additional scoop of ice cream.  You don’t need a whole lot of ice cream but I feel it is needed to counter balance the intense chocolate flavor.

Ingredients
  • 1 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 Tbsp flour
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp water
  • 1 Tbsp canola oil
  • a pinch of salt
  • ice cream, optional
Instructions
  1. In a mug or small microwave safe dish, add the coco powder, flour, sugar, water, oil, and salt.
  2. Stir to combine.
  3. Microwave for 30 seconds. Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream.

  • I made this as directed (except for adding a splash of vanilla), and it was delicious! A question: have you tried adapting this recipe so that it would make a pan of brownies, and did you get good results? Whatever the case, thanks for sharing!

  • this was actually tasty :) i used vegetable oil instead of canola though – my chocolate fix for the day :) i also microwaved for 40 seconds

  • I followed this recipe exactly, and the results were great.
    I used a little dish instead of a mug, because my mugs are very big, plus it would be easier to clean. I am not sure why others had a hard time and poor results. Maybe the wrong type of cocoa, oil, or maybe the microwave time needed to be adjusted, as microwave wattages do differ. Anyway, mine was great with a little vanilla frozen yogurt, and no leftover brownies to tempt me later. Thank you!

  • I tried this recipe with the exception that I added a small splash of vanilla. It turned out great. I am thinking of trying it again. The brownie was good and even better with ice cream.

  • I tried this recipe and it was pretty good considering prep time + cook time. I did however use dark brown sugar and used coconut oil in place of any other oil. MIcrowaved for 1:20 minutes and what I got was a spongy-cake-like-muffin-texture. Topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream compliments it very well. I Will definitely be making this again when my sweet tooth kicks in. I can’t imagine using anything but coconut oil for this recipe. BTW the raw ingredients together were to die for!! Nom…enjoy and thanks for doing the experimenting for me! :)

  • Okay I have just made this and let me tell you it was disgusting. It looks awful and taste like nothing but cocoa powder! In so very sorry but I have tasted better Brusselsprots this is simply awful. I started playing with it like it is clay

    It tasted very strongly of the oil I used (olive oil) and was kinda…gummy? Floury?
    It was chocolatey enough but I wouldn’t call it a brownie, more a \cake\.

    Not a waste of ingredients since I ate it but will not make again.

    • Annie,
      Olive oil isn’t a good substitute for Canola oil (which I wouldn’t use either). Instead try this with coconut oil or good old vegetable oil. Olive oil has a distinctive taste more for woody items like veggies (but you shouldn’t fry or sautee with it). Coconut oil is great for baking sweets.

  • Geeeeez. I haven’t even made this yet but now I’m feeling kinda nauseous. I can’t believe how combative some of these comments are! Adult people talking about making a brownie in the microwave, ridiculing each other because they do or don’t like it. whaaaaaaa? haha, no wonder the world is such a mess!

  • I really liked this recipe but I decided to tweak it a bit to make it healthier: I used avocado and honey instead of the oil and sugar and it turned out great.

  • Oh my goodness! I changed this up a little bit but it is so yummy!

    1 tbsp melted real butter (not margarine!)
    1 tbsp water
    1 tbsp oil
    1 tbsp flour
    1/2 tbsp hot chocolate mix (I used nestle)
    1/2 tbsp powdered milk
    1/4 tbsp sugar
    pinch of salt

    It was done in about 35 seconds and it’s my new favorite. I think the butter and powdered milk are the trick.

    I don’t usually have cocoa on hand but I needed some for a recipe and realized I’d never looked into any cocoa recipes. This is a cool one for a quick snack

  • Too everyone who does not like microwave brownies, you must be doing soemthing wrong..
    If you leave it in in the mic for too long, it will get very dry and event burnt and smell TOXIC.. I alayws watch mine in the mic,, and i take it out before i see it star to rise too much and dry up.. The more flour you use, the dier it will be…. FOr simplicity I use a packet of Swiss Miss hot chocolate, 3 tblspoons flour, 2 tblspoons water, 2 tblsspoons oil (canola/vegeteable), pinch of salt,, and mic for just under one min….
    BEST SNACK. no eggs, or extra calories!!

  • The reviews are so mixed on this recipe, I wonder if it’s just personal taste or if there is something done differently that makes or breaks the results. Anyone have the results change between awesome and awful by a seemingly small alteration?

  • This was frankly the shittiest tasting brownie I have ever eaten. I had to throw it away and I fucking love food.

  • love this! i make it when i need something sweet and chocolaty but it’s too cold to walk somewhere. (it’s winter in MN.)
    when i don’t have ice cream, i use powdered sugar. i’ve used a couple recipes for this and this one was the best. brown sugar made a real difference, plus i put a dash of vanilla extract which is really yummy.

  • Made this just not, but instead of vanilla ice cream, I used peppermint ice cream in the Holiday spirit (: Quick desert to make during my finals week!

  • i used a different recipie and it worked quite well;
    1/4 cup of flour
    1/4 cup of sugar
    2 tablespoons of coaoca
    2 tablespoons of oil
    3 tablespoons of water
    cook in microwave for 1min 40 secs

  • Canola Oil is the healthiest oil you can get, with similar properties to olive oil. Canola grows in western Canada. The oil comes from the seeds.

  • I feel as though I should speak for everyone who didn’t like this recipe and decided not to leave a comment. This recipe was gross!!! It smelled like oil coming out of the microwave and tasted like oil when I put it in my mouth…..yuck!! Granted, I did not have ice cream, but I can’t imagine it would taste much better with it. I want the brownie and ice cream to blend, not for the ice cream to mask the grossness of the brownie – which is what I image it would do.

  • Lisa P – You could totally sub coconut oil or butter or olive oil. They are the healthiest fats you can get. Stay far away from vegetable oils though – they are dangerous to your health. Look up ‘vegetable oils dangerous’ on google…. eye opening. Ro’s comment above is going off very dated media propaganda. Great book out by Bruce Fife on Coconut Oil for more info and lots of new research coming out on it.

  • Thisis great!!! I didn’t have any vanilla ice cream so I put frozen whip cream with chocolate syrup. SO GOOOOOD

  • Hi! great recipe, this is the best one i’ve used except i didn’t have canola oil so i used extra light virgin olive oil and instead of cocoa powder i used drinking chocolate and it was so yummy! Thanks for you’re recipe :)

  • DONT use coconut oil… It seems like a no-brainer diet pick but coconut oil is actually REALLY high in saturated fat… you’d be better using a vegetable oil :)

  • This is sooo good! A very nice treat. I used white granulated sugar instead of brown. The consistency was so fudgey and it’s such an easy recipe! I calculated the recipe with the white sugar instead and it is just under 300 calories per serving.
    I wonder if there’s are possible healthier substitutions that can be made…

  • This is an awesome recipe! I didn’t have and cocoa powder on hand, but NesQuick chocolate milk powder made a good substitute. Also, I doubled the recipe and had to cook it for like 2 minutes or so

  • i just made this. you’re right–intensely chocolate, but perfect with a bit of vanilla ice cream! i think it’s dangerous knowing how quickly i can get a chocolate fix now…. :)

  • I wonder if this would work with coconut oil? I’ve been trying to put that into my diet for it’s health benefits. I may just “have” to do some experimenting later and try some brownies….darn! LOL
