Tater Tot Casserole

This recipe is one that I have been making since I was married 17 years ago.  I got it from a friend and made my own changes to the original.  It is one of my husbands favorite dishes.  When we were first married I would make the whole pan and then we would take the leftovers to work for lunches.  I must say I got my fill of the casserole back then, but my hubby never tired of it.  I still surprise him with it occasionally since he loves it so much.  It is one of those dishes that doesn’t photograph well, but it very tasty.

  • I started making this about 30 years ago. Our version is hamburger, 1 can cream of chicken, 2 cans cream of mushroom, Milk to thin the soup. Tator tots on top. Bake til bubbly.

  • I love Tater Tot casserole. I learned to make it a different way though. Like so many of the other posters, I use drained green beans instead of corn. Covered it with the cheese, then arrange tater tots on top. Then bake til tots are crispy. I like the idea one poster had of using spaghetti sauce. As I first learned to make this casserole using tomato soup and half a soup can of water or milk. I like it best that way. But next time will use spaghetti sauce. Thanks for the idea.

  • I layered tater tots on the bottom then covered it with some mixed veggies and the beef with the cream of mushroom soup and some cheese. then another layer of tater tots followed by the rest of the veggies and cream of mushroom soup with meat mixture followed by MORE cheese! However, in the process of making this I realized that I forgot to add the milk. I hope that this casserole still turns out :-)

  • I just put this in the oven. I followed this exactly as the recipe said. I usually do not add any milk, use cream of chicken soup and put the tater tots on top. I hope this one turns out well.

  • Do I have to use foil if I put the tat tots on top?

  • I have just started making this, I too put the tater tots on top. One time I was out of any soup so I used a jar of spaghetti sauce mixed with a carton of sour cream. This version was even more popular with my family than the mushroom soup version–its probably healthier too!!

  • Love me some tater tot casserole! We always put the meat and cheese on the bottom and tots on top, makes them nice and crispy when baking! Deliciousness.

  • How funny. We just had a version of this tonight for dinner. It’s one of my husband’s favorites.

  • I make a version of this, but it’s a tad bit different. I use green beans instead of corn and I put the tots on top! It’s a family favorite!! This one sounds yummy, too!! =)

  • My husband loves Tator Tot Casserole. I on the other hand could easily live without it. So when I make it the ground beef has to be seasoned well with salt and pepper and onion. I always bake the tator tots first and. Just as someone else mentioned, the tator tots go on the top when I make this. They turn out extra crispy which makes it more tatsy. I do NOT like soggy tots.

  • You can never go wrong with a good comforting casserole. Sounds like one the whole family would love!

  • I make this with cream of chicken or cream of celery and I mix it when half way through cooking breaking up all the potatoes and put Parmesan on top and put back in oven

  • Heehee. I love tatertot casserole, but at our house we used canned green beans instead of corn and often flipped it upside down so that the tatertots were on top. That way you could arrange them in rows and other designs. :)

  • I was wondering if you think it would be good by substituting cream of mushroom for cream of chicken. Me and my family don’t care for mushrooms or the taste of the soup.

  • We love tatertot casserole! It’s such a quick fix! (I believe you left out the cheese in the ingredients :)
